This is the last time we get to have a date like this! On 12/12/70 Led Zeppelin’s “Led Zeppelin III” LP was No. 1 in England. Also on 12/12/70 the Gilbert O’Sullivan 45 “Nothing Rhymed” charts at No. 8 in England.
The last Led Zeppelin LP that I bought as a new release? For those not in the know, I am not much of a Led Zeppelin fan. I do not own any Led Zeppelin LP’s or CD’s. I know that I like #3 better than #2 or #1, and that it’s likely the sole Led Zeppelin title I would ever want to hear again, in private. I know that I do have some tracks by them on European / British / Japanese sampler LP’s, but…my blog has never been the place where one would head to learn anything out about Led Zeppelin.
Big Led Zeppelin truth: no Led Zeppelin CD has ever sounded as good as the original LP’s sounded. Fact.
Gilbert O’Sullivan had a single that was so massive (“Alone Again, Naturally”), I initially dismissed him, as a writer / performer – for a good many years. My friend Rick Snyder always was so rhapsodic about Gilby’s works, and I confess that I have enjoyed everything that I’ve sat through. “Nothing Rhymed” is an incredible single – nothing rhymes! Yeah! Indeed, “Nothing Rhymed” is Track #1 on his Rhino Records “Best Of” CD from 1991, which I heartily recommend.

No Led Zep on my shelves either.
Jeepers. Just the other day my wife and I came across a photo of Gilbert O’Sullivan somehow [was it in a record store?] and we shuddered in unison. As a nine year old at the time of the ascendency of “Along Again, Naturally” in the pop charts, I found the song to be terminally maudlin, even at that precocious age. That’s a big “game over” for life on the singer, no matter how much anyone else on planet earth may gush about Gilbert O’Sullivan. Seriously!
Yet another reason we all get along so well…
My wife has a copy of “Physical Graffiti” [which I think is worth having for “Boogie With Stu”] but I did buy a Robert Plant solo album [“Now + Zen”] used with credit after it came out. I always think I would like to hear “In Through The Out Door” again. During my brief two years of “FM Rock” listening, the album came out and got predictably heavy airplay at the time. It seemed to eschew the “Led Zep clichés” as I recall. I liked the “Zep-go-salsa” track.
I take that back, we also have “Now and Zen”. Kenna was quite smitten with it at the time, but I can’t say it’s been played in many years. Gotta say his career has taken an unexpected direction in the last few years.
Never would’ve thought we’d be discussing Led Zeppelin solo careers on this blog. Must learn to keep my mouth shut at times. Friends don’t let friends buy Led Zeppelin solo career records. At least it was Kenna, and not you, Brian!
