February 2012…so far!

2-9-12             February 2012so far!

Country & western legend Ernest Tubb born 1914 – and not a moment too soon!

Been rather quiet around here.  A week ago, I did get out a bit – checked out some record stores up in Ventura, CA.  Some really odd stuff to be found up there:

DUCHIN, PETER – s/t, CAPITOL US LP EZ ’72

HADJIDAKIS, MANOS – SIX POPULAR PICTURES (BALLET), PHILIPS GR LP

HARDING, MIKE – ONE MAN SHOW, PHILIPS UK 2LP Live ’76

JANEY AND DENNIS – s/t, REPRISE US LP ’70 promo

JO JO ZEP & THE FALCONS – SO YOUNG, OZ AUS LP

LINDISFARNE – BACK AND FOURTH, MERCURY UK LP Alan Hull ’80

MITTEREGGER, HERWIG – KEIN MUT – KEIN MADCHEN, CBS DE LP Spliff member

OLDFIELD, MIKE – OMMADAWN, VIRGIN UK LP original issue

ROCKIN HORSE – YES IT IS, SING SING US LP Jimmy Campbell, re-issue

STEVENS, CAT – BUDDHA AND THE CHOCOLATE BOX, ISLAND UK LP

V.A. – BY INVITATION ONLY, ATLANTIC UK 2LP ’76

V.A. – MUSIC FROM FREE CREEK, CHARISMA UK 2LP ’73

WORKING WEEK – WORKING NIGHTS, VIRGIN UK LP with Robert Wyatt

Found in Ventura. CA area record stores:  EZ Hits of the day for Peter Duchin.  A real Greek Manos Hadjidakis Philips LP!  I don’t think I ever heard a Mike Harding LP before.  I remember the ‘hype’ surrounding Janey and Dennis – but I don’t think I ever got to hear their only ’70 LP – S.F. bay area musicians?.  A Jo Jo Zep LP previous to  “Cha”!  Wasn’t sure if this Lindisfarne LP had Alan Hull on it or not – it does!  Never saw the Herwig Mitteregger LP before, and I am a huge fan of “The Spliff Radio Show” LP.  This is the debut UK version of “Ommadawn” by Mr. Oldfield – nothing printed on the rear of the record sleeve.  Rockin’ Horse was re-issued by a NY company called Sing Sing – a virtually unknown ’71 UK Philips LP featuring Liverpool singer / songwriter Jimmy Campbell.  This copy of “Buddha” by Cat Stevens is an Island UK edition – yet the actual record label (and scribe in the run out groove) looks to be from A&M USA.  “By Invitation Only” is a UK ’76 double sampler LP for a charity – incl. The Rolling Stones, Yes, EL&P etc.  “Music From Free Creek” is a double LP on Charisma UK, that I don’t remember much about at all – Dr. John, Keith Emerson, Linda Ronstadt are all  on it!  I bought the “Venceremos” 12” single from Working Week as soon as it was released, because Robert Wyatt sings on it.  Not sure how much of this LP he sings on, but – I’d never seen the LP of it before!

The only Jo Jo Zep & The Falcons I’d ever heard was “Hit & Run” from “Screaming Targets.” [Columbia 1979] I am familiar with Elvis Costello’s cover of “So Young,” though. That title track was added to the US “Screaming Targets” but probably pre-dates it from the album you just bought. I’m guessing a 1978 release on Mushroom. I can find no “So Young” album on Discogs.com but don’t have the time right now to look elsewhere.
